Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival 2019
Wednesday 31 July-Sunday 4 August 2019 – the jazz festival in Ystad celebrates its 10th anniversary.
The five-day festival will present 43 concerts, a jazz parade, a fanfare from the church tower, an open stage for young Swedish jazz musicians, JazzKidz, family concerts, jazz breakfasts with interesting interviews, jam sessions, an art exhibition by this year’s jazz artist at Gallery M1 and the festival’s 10-year exhibition at Ystads konstmuseum.
The festival gets off to a sneaky start on Tuesday 30 July at 16.00 with the jazz parade, which annually attracts thousands of jazz lovers to the heart of Ystad. The 2019 jazz parade will be led by the 15-man Italian band Funk Off – appearing for the first time in Scandinavia.
The festival presents world stars, big names from Sweden and Europe, Swedish legends and young jazz musicians – over 250 artists, from Vietnam in the east to Brazil and the USA in the west.
Among the world stars are jazz legend Benny Golson (who will be 90 this year) performing with Norrbotten Big Band, Charles Lloyd, Julian Lage, Eric Harland, Marvin Sewell, Reuben Rogers,

The open stage at Ystads konstmuseum will provide a platform for Swedish jazz musicians throughout the festival.
The ECM record label celebrates 50 years this year. We will be highlighting this with concerts by a number of major ECM artists and a jazz breakfast where British reviewer and ECM specialist Michael Tucker will talk about the record label.
In addition to the jazz parade with Funk Off, the band will be playing at a swinging garden party in the park of Bergsjöholm castle. A private castle that is opening its grounds for the jazz festival!
The concerts are held in Ystad’s picturesque town centre among cobbled streets, half-timbered buildings and brick gothic architecture that frames a large open festival area around Ystads Teater,
S:ta Maria kyrka, Klosterkyrkan, Per Helsas gård, Hos Morten Café, Ystads konstmuseum and Ystads Stadsbibliotek. By the sea and the long stretch of sandy beach there will be concerts at Ystad Saltsjöbad and Ystad Marina. The grounds of Bergsjöholm castle will be the venue for our funky garden party. Solhällan, the classic dance rotunda, is in Löderup approx. 10 km east of Ystad.
The festival’s Artistic Director is pianist Jan Lundgren. When he is not at home in Ystad, he tours worldwide or is working as Artistic Director of the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen.

The 2019 guest of honour, Benny Golson, performs on Saturday 3 August with Norrbotten Big Band. Benny Golson, 90 this year, will be playing only two concerts in Europe – one of them is in Ystad!

Since 1748, Ystad’s tower watchman has looked out over the town to check that all is well during the night. Each year a festival tower watchman is selected. This year Nils Landgren will climb the 107 narrow steps in St. Mary’s Church tower to play a fanfare on his red trombone at 22.00 on 31 July.
Jazz Artist 2019
The jazz artist for 2019 is also a legend and will be 80 this year! Ardy Strüwer! His jazz painting is called “Piano Palette”. With a smile, Ardy sends the greeting “Kizz my Jazz”!
Auction of Ardy Stüwer’s original: The Piano Palette original, which the artist has donated to the festival, will be auctioned. Bids can be placed at ystadjazz.se. The auction concludes at the festival’s final concert on 4 August at 21.00.
