The Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival kicks off on 1 August
The jazz festival in Ystad is approaching fast. The ninth festival will be held 1-5 August 2018.

The festival opens with the Yazz Parade, which every year attracts thousands of music lovers to join the lively procession through central Ystad. The 2018 jazz parade is led by the Second Line Jazzband. 1 Aug 12.30, from Österportstorg through Ystad to Hotell Continental du Sud.

Jazz trumpeter Mårten Lundgren blows the fanfare for this year’s festival. 1 Aug 22.30, S:ta Maria kyrka. He is a regular performer on the jazz scene in the Copenhagen-Malmö region.
An international festival
The festival features some 250 artists from countries such as South Korea, Australia, USA, Jamaica, Israel, England, Portugal, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden.
Among the world stars appearing at the festival are: The Manhattan Transfer, Monty Alexander, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Youn Sun Nah, Omer Klein, Avishai Cohen, Wolfgang Haffner, Andreas Schaerer, Paolo Fresu, Bill Evans, Claire Martin, Jim Mullen, Lizz Wright. Trudy Kerr, Jukka Perko, Nils Petter Molvær, Ellen Andrea Wang, Phronesis and many more.

Ida Sand and Trinity will be releasing CDs during the festival!
Cécile McLorin Salvant is only 28, but is already widely tipped to become the successor to Ella Fitzgerald. 1 Aug 17.00, Ystad Arena.
The legendary vocal group, The Manhattan Transfer, are celebrating 45 years in music with European tour dates in Vienna, Ystad and London! 1 Aug 20.00, Ystad Arena.
Sunrise concert with Norwegian trumpeter and electronica master Nils Petter Molvær. 5 Aug 05.20, Ales stenar. Bus tickets can be booked with the concert tickets. The bus leaves Ystad Bus Station at 04.00 and returns 30 minutes after the concert.
Gunnar Eriksson & RilkeEnsemblen, a choir with 17 singers, pays tribute to Lars Gullin, who would have been 90 this year. The concert also features Georg Riedel, Jan Allan, Joakim Rolandsson and Mats Eriksson. 2 Aug 13.00, S:ta Maria kyrka.
Jan Lundgren & Hans Backenroth meet Ratinger Kammerchor & Dominikus Burghardt featuring 21 vocalists. 3 Aug 19.00, Ystads Teater.
Finale gala concert with Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Jan Lundgren Trio, Paolo Fresu, Wolfgang Haffner, Jukka Perko and the 15-member string ensemble Musica Vitae (they performed at the most recent Nobel banquet). 5 Aug 20.00, Ystad Arena.
Jam sessions at Ystad Marina with house band Sven Erik Lundeqvist Trio. 2-3-4 Aug 24.00-03.00. Artists from the day’s concerts often join the sessions to create a great atmosphere!

Ystad’s picturesque medieval town centre is the “festival site” with Ystads Teater, S:ta Maria kyrka, Klosterkyrkan, Scala, Ystads konstmuseum, Hos Morten Café, Per Helsas gård.
Ystads Stadsbibliotek and Ystad Arena within a 5-10 minute walk from the central pedestrian precinct. Ystad Saltsjöbad and Ystad Marina are by the sea and the sandy beaches.
Solhällan, the classic dance rotunda, is in Löderup approx. 10 km east of Ystad.
Ales stenar (Scandinavia’s Stonehenge) on the Kåseberga ridge is approx. 16 km east of Ystad.
Guest of Honour 2018
The Jamaican/American pianist Monty Alexander is this year’s Guest of Honour. During his career he played at Jilly’s on 52nd Street in New York where Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson also performed. Monty Alexander has released over 70 albums.
Lifetime Honorary Ambassador
Quincy Jones has been the festival’s Lifetime Honorary Ambassador since his visit to YSJF in 2012.
Jazz Ambassadors 2018
Leading international designer Efva Attling is a dedicated jazz enthusiast. Jazz can be heard in Efva Attling’s shops around the world. After a career as a model, Efva was the singer-songwriter for the band, X-Models, which she also founded.
Camilla Ahlgren is the co-author of the TV crime series Bron (The Bridge), which has been a success all over the world. She has written extensively for Swedish TV series and has lived for 11 years in the village of Snårestad outside Ystad.
Jazz Artist 2018
Angelica Wiik has created this year’s jazz painting and called it YAZZ. Her art is sensual and colourful. She often paints with jazz playing in the background. Angelica will be exhibiting her paintings at Gallery M1, Continental du Sud, 28 July–5 Aug.
The YAZZ original, which the artist has donated to the festival, will be auctioned. Bids can be placed at ystadjazz.se. The auction concludes at the festival’s final concert, 5 Aug 20.00.
