Final line-up for Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival 2018 announced
The ninth Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival will be held 1-5 August 2018

During the five-day festival there will be over 50 events – a jazz parade, the traditional Fanfare from the Church Tower, 40 concerts, two free JazzKidz concerts, two jazz breakfasts with interesting interviews, three jam sessions and an exhibition by this year’s Jazz Artist.
The festival begins with the jazz parade, which draws thousands of jazz lovers to the centre of Ystad. This year’s jazz parade will be led by the Second Line Jazzband.
The festival presents world stars, young up and coming Swedish and European artists, and Swedish legends. There will be more than 200 artists from countries such as South Korea and Australia in the east to the USA in the west.
Among the world stars are The Manhattan Transfer, Monty Alexander, Cécile McLorin Salvant (who won her latest Grammy in February), Youn Sun Nah, Omer Klein, Avishai Cohen, Wolfgang Haffner, Andreas Schaerer, Paolo Fresu, Bill Evans, Claire Martin, Jim Mullen, Lizz Wright, Trudy Kerr, Jukka Perko, Nils Petter Molvær, Ellen Andrea Wang, Phronesis etc.
Among the major Swedish stars are Jan Lundgren, Nils Landgren, Ulf Wakenius, Magnus Lindgren, Goran Kajfeš, Martin Tingvall, Hans Backenroth, Filip Jers, Mårten Lundgren, Elin Larsson, Martin Berggren, Anders Bergcrantz, Magnum Coltrane Price, Trinity, John Venkiah, Sven Erik Lundeqvist etc.
Among the Swedish legends are Jan Allan, Georg Riedel, Merit Hemmingson and many more.

Selected events from the programme:
A unique sunrise concert at 05.20 on 5 August at Ales Stenar will be a magical experience with the Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær.
Two major concerts with choirs:
Gunnar Eriksson & RilkeEnsemblen, a 17-member choir, celebrate the music of Lars Gullin with Georg Riedel, Jan Allan, Joakim Rolandsson and Mats Eriksson at S:ta Maria kyrka on 2 August at 13.00. There will be Jazz Breakfast presentation (in Swedish) of Lars Gullin’s music at 09.00 the same day at Hos Morten Café.

Jan Lundgren & Hans Backenroth meet Ratinger Kammerchor, a 21-member choir led by Dominikus Burghardt, in a concert featuring music by Albioni, Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Ystads Teater, 3 August 19.00.
The festival’s grand finale concert features the Swedish jazz elite and international guests: Jan Lundgren Trio, Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Musica Vitae and Paolo Fresu, Wolfgang Haffner and Jukka Perko. Ystad Arena, 5 August 20.00.

Ystad’s picturesque medieval town centre is the “festival zone”:
Ystads Teater, S:ta Maria kyrka, Klosterkyrkan, Scala, Ystads konstmuseum, Hos Morten Café, Per Helsas gård.
Ystads Stadsbibliotek and Ystad Arena are 5-10 minute’s walk from the main pedestrian precinct.
Ystad Saltsjöbad and Ystad Marina are located on the Baltic shore
Solhällan, the classic dance rotunda, is in Löderup, 10 km east of Ystad.
Ales Stenar (Scandinavia’s Stonehenge) is in Kåseberga, 16 km east of Ystad.

Artistic Director
The pianist Jan Lundgren is the festival’s Artistic Director.

Guest of Honour
The Jamaican/American pianist Monty Alexander, who performed at Jilly´s in New York, where legends such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson also played, is the Guest of Honour for 2018. Monty Alexander has released over 70 albums.

Lifetime Honorary Ambassador
Quincy Jones has been the festival’s Lifetime Honorary Ambassador since he was in Ystad for the entire festival in 2012.

Fanfare from the Church Tower
This year’s Fanfare from the Church Tower at S:ta Marias kyrka will be performed by the trumpeter Mårten Lundgren on 1 August at 22.30. Lundgren is a leading figure in the Copenhagen-Malmö region’s jazz scene.

The Festival Ambassadors for 2018
International designer Efva Attling is a devoted jazz enthusiast. Jazz is heard in all of Efva Attling’s shops around the world.
Camilla Ahlgren, co-writer of the globally successful TV crime series, Bron, has lived in the village of Snårestad outside Ystad for the past 11 years.

The Jazz Artist for 2018
This year’s Jazz painting, YAZZ, is by Angelica Wiik. During the festival, you can see more of Angelica Wiik’s art at an exhibition at Gallery M1, Continental du Sud,

Bid for the YAZZ original!
The original YAZZ painting, donated to the festival by the artist, will be auctioned. Make a bid at ystadjazz.se. The auction will end at the festival’s final concert on 5 August at 20.00.
YAZZ is also available as a lithograph and art poster in the Jazz Shop during the festival and via the festival’s online shop.
