ARTISTS AT YSTAD SWEDEN JAZZ FESTIVAL 2–5 AUG 2023

Four packed festival days 1 Yazz Parade through central Ystad. 1 Festival Fanfare to announce the festival on the first evening from the S:ta Maria church tower. 19 concerts with major artists. Tickets are available via ystadjazz.se and ystadsteater.se 6 Next Jazz Generation concerts. Free concerts with the young generation of Swedish jazz musicians. 2 jam sessions. Selected highpoints Rhoda Scott – legendary American Hammond organist discovered by Count Basie. She will be performing with the Polish vibraphonist Izabella Effenberg and French drummer Julie Saury.
Jan Garbarek featuring Trilok Gurtu – a whole evening with the Norwegian genius Jan Garbarek on soprano and tenor sax, the Indian percussion magician Trilok Gurtu, the German jazz fusion pianist Rainer Brüninghaus and, on bass, the Brazilian Yuri Daniel. This is a special two-hour concert!
Kyle Eastwood will be appearing with his quintet. Kyle Eastwood is an American bassist, composer and arranger. He has written music for films including nine movies featuring or directed by his father, Clint Eastwood. The band consists of Kyle Eastwood (bass), Andrew McCornack (piano), Quentin Collins (trumpet), Brandon Allen (saxophones) and Chris Higgingbottom (drums).
Grégory Privat is a young classically trained pianist from Martinique. A late night solo concert in the abbey setting of Klosterkyrkan with Caribbean, classical and jazz elements.
Marilyn Mazur´s Shamania offer top-class world music when the Danish percussionist and composer Marilyn Mazur brings her international band of leading female musicians: Makiko Hirabayashi (piano & keyboards), Lisbeth Diers (congas & percussion), Lis Wessberg (trombone), Josefine Cronsholm (vocals), Lotte Anker (saxophones), Ida Gormsen (bass) and Hildegunn Øiseth (trumpet & goat horn).
Deborah Brown with Jan Lundgren Trio – the jazz festival’s artistic director, pianist Jan Lundgren, has invited the American jazz singer Deborah Brown. A longed-for return to YSJF.
Isabella Lundgren with Musica Vitae – a tribute to Dorothy Fields in Mariakyrkan, a church dating from the 1240s.
Marcin Wasilewski All Stars – a tribute to the Polish composer and pianist Krzysztof Komeda, known for, among other things, the film music for many of Roman Polanski’s films, including Rosemary´s Baby.
A concert programme with many outstanding female artists!
Plus JazzKidz and Senior Jazz concerts. The concert venue capacities are only 120-400 people. Great experiences in small venues.

This year’s Jazz Artist – Karl Valve Pop artist Karl Valve has donated a large work of art, a photo transfer on plexiglass mounted on brushed aluminium, which will be auctioned during the festival. The work of art is also this year’s art poster and cover art for the festival programme. Karl Valve will be exhibiting his work at Gallery M1 in Ystad, 27 July- 6 August. Karl Valve
This year’s Jazz Ambassadors are two successful Ystad figures who have made an impact in Europe. * Christina Nilsson, a celebrated international multi-award-winning young opera singer who is currently singing the title role in Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.
