French soprano saxophonist Emile Parisien is widely regarded as a jazz visionary.
The French newspaper, Le Monde, has called him “the best new thing that has happened in European jazz for a long time”.
His playing has prompted comparisons with earlier masters of the instrument such as Sidney Bechet, Steve Lacy and John Coltrane. The British newspaper, The Times, referred to him simply as “Europe’s leading soprano saxophonist”.
Tonight’s concert will draw on “Double Screening” (2019), the new album with his quartet. The music blends the traditions of French and African folk music with departures into contemporary classical music and free jazz, all played in a spirit of virtuoso improvisation.
