The church is Ystad’s oldest building and began to be built around 1200. From the beginning it was probably a Romanesque basilica with a flat roof, but around 1275 the nave got a pointed arch, one of which still remains. The church has perfect acoustics. Maria Church has 180 very good seats and 100 listening seats.

Since 1748, Ystad’s tower watchman has looked out over the town to check that all is well during the night. Each year a festival tower watchman is selected. This year trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær will climb the 107 narrow steps in St. Mary’s Church tower to play the fanfare.
