NEWSLETTER – the Jazz Year 2021 in Ystad

Despite the pandemic, the Jazz Year 2021 been an eventful one and we would like to share some of the highlights with you!

Ystad – Jazz Municipality of the Year 2021
Svensk Jazz’s honorary award Jazz Municipality of the Year is granted to recognise the municipality where jazz is promoted in the best way. The award concerns not only that the prize-winner has seen the value of jazz, leading to generous grants as a result, but mainly the quality of the activities and the implemented initiatives for jazz. The prize is to be seen as a stimulus for municipalities, culture schools/music schools and regions to deepen cooperation and reach more and larger groups of listeners.

The award ceremony was at the Svensk Jazz annual meeting and Jazzfesten in August. The jury stated: “Through its strong support, both financially and in the form of access to networks and premises, it has been possible to bring the area together around jazz – in its jazz clubs/jazz cafés, the JazzKidz and Ung scen (Next Jazz Generation) initiatives and with a jazz festival that has grown so strongly that it attracts attention both nationally and internationally. Ystad Municipality is a role model.”

Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival
We implemented a full festival on 4-6 August, but with limited seating in accordance with the Swedish Public Health Agency’s restrictions.

There was a total of 36 concerts and events. Some were free-admission events such as the night concert at Klosterkyrkan, six Next Jazz Generation concerts, four JazzKidz concerts, six SeniorJazz concerts at municipal elderly care homes, jam sessions and not least the conversation between Musik i Syd’s CEO Susanne Rydén and music legend Georg Riedel. Emile Parisien played this year’s festival fanfare from the church tower and had concerts with Jan Lundgren and his own French quartet. Other highlights included the Scandinavian Jazz Orchestra’s premiere with Isabella Lundgren and concerts by Yamandu Costa, Caroline Henderson, Nicole Johänntgen, Lily Dahab, Andreas Schaerer and many more. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2021, so the entire programme on 7 August was devoted to this milestone.

The Jazz Ambassadors were author Susanna Alakoski and TV profile Karl Fredrik på Eklaholm. We would like to thank our audiences for filling every available seat that the restrictions allowed!

Ystad Jazz Piano Award
The Ystad Jazz Piano Award is a newly inaugurated prize that was awarded for the first time at the 2021 jazz festival. The award comprises SEK 25 000 and a paid performance at Ystads Teater during the forthcoming jazz festival. The Danish pianist Zier Romme was the first recipient of the award, which is planned to be granted annually.
Those wishing to contribute to the award can pay in an appropriate amount to bank giro 605–2450.

Ystad Municipality Culture Prize 2021

Ystad Municipality has awarded an annual culture prize since 1965. Previous prize-winners include actor Ernst-Hugo Järegård, the artists Gerhard Nordström and Ola Billgren, the authors Björn Ranelid and Henning Mankell, the musical artists Edda Magnason and Jan Lundgren and many other well-renowned cultural personalities. As you can imagine, we were delighted and honoured when the Ystad Jazz association and all the volunteers involved were added to this list!

The Culture Prize, worth SEK 35 000, was given at the Kulturfesten event in November. The Cultural Committee stated:
“Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival means a lot for Ystad Municipality and its activities have reached far beyond the region’s borders. Here, there are highpoints and an impressive breadth. The festival’s breadth encompasses well-known artists, up and coming talents and highly-reputed musicians.
With this Culture Prize, we also want to draw attention to the considerable voluntary contribution of the committee members, who work throughout the year, and to the hundreds of volunteers and their fantastic work during and in connection with the festival days.”

Ystad Winter Piano Fest – Premiere!
Ystad Jazz arranged a winter event for the first time – the Ystad Winter Piano Fest on 27-28 December.

Ystads Teater has one of Europe’s most exclusive Steinway grand pianos. With fantastic support from Steinway & Sons and Juhl-Sørensen, we also had access to a fine Steinway grand piano at Ystad Saltsjöbad. We could therefore offer a real fest with excellent pianists. The artists for the first fest were Johanna Summer, Nik Bärtsch, Jan Lundgren, Mattias Svensson & String Quartet, Jacob Karlzon, Marialy Pacheco & Rhani Krija and Iiro Rantala.

To inspire the younger generation, we invited all the piano students from the Ystad Culture School to listen to a concert, and a number of selected students took part in a workshop with Jan Lundgren.

Facebook – Jazz Ystad Österlen
Inspired by the awards, we have started a new Facebook page: Jazz Ystad Österlen.
We would like all associations, promoters, artists, musicians and bands who are active and arrange concerts, events and jazz-related lectures to use the page as a notice board and forum where the jazz audience can easily find out what is happening on the jazz scene in our south-eastern corner of  Skåne and Sweden. Help us to spread the word about jazz! #jazzystadösterlen #jazzystadosterlen
Of course, our Facebook page, Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, is still in place!

Ystad Jazz
Ystad Jazz is the association that arranges the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, Ystad Winter Piano Fest and Next Jazz Generation, JazzKidz and SeniorJazz concerts as well as grants scholarships to young musicians and much more. YAZZ is the Ystad Jazz logo.

Sponsors and supporters
Everything that Ystad Jazz produces would be impossible without support and sponsorship, as the entire organisation is based on voluntary work. We are therefore extremely grateful for the support we receive from public sector organisations, companies and friends who through their contributions, large and small, make it possible for us to develop Ystad and Österlen into a Mecca for jazz in Sweden. Imagine what we can achieve together!
Those who wish to become special supporters, Yazzvänner (Yazz Friends), can pay a yearly fee SEK 750 into bank giro 229-8438. International supporters are asked to contact

The financial side is mainly based on ticket sales and activity grants from Kulturrådet, Region Skåne, Musik i Syd and Ystad Municipality. This makes it possible to offer a high-quality programme.

Since 2011, the events have been arranged in close cooperation with Musik I Syd.

We wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome you to the summer festival on 3-6 August 2022!

Festival Committee

“With the superb Steinway grand piano at Ystads Teater and a specially brought in Steinway D grand piano at Ystad Saltsjöbad, the audience will be offered outstanding international artists”, says Jan Lundgren, Artistic Director of the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival and the newly started Ystad Winter Piano Fest.
