The festival’s Guest of Honour, songwriter, vocalist and pianist Ivan Lins, has been one of the leading figures in Brazilian popular music and jazz for over five decades. The multiple Latin Grammy-winning musician is the most-recorded Brazilian artist living abroad. His songs have been covered by a multitude of international stars over the years, such as Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Barbra Streisand and Sting.
Ivan Lins initially attracted attention with his first hit composition “Madalena”, recorded by Elis Regina in 1970. He is a prolific songwriter and has recorded over 40 albums. Several of his compositions have become jazz standards including “Love Dance”, “Velas Içadas” and “Começar de Novo” (Starting Over), a song that in the English lyric version is called “The Island”.
